Getting active

I was looking at my userinfo page and noticed that since I created this journal two months ago, I have either joined or friended 42 asylums (I keep wanting to call them comms, argh). In that two-month period, have I actually posted to any of them? Errrr, no. Commented occasionally, yes, but posted, no. This really needs to be rectified. *Pokes self*

On the bright side, the week from hell at work is now over, so I'll actually have the *time* to do more than commenting here and there. I'm in the process of writing some Housefic, but perhaps I should try to do things in a few other fandoms as well. (I need more fandom-related icons, too!)

Meta: Looking on the bright side of recent fannish upheavals

For the past several months, it's felt like LJ-based fandom has been struck by earthquakes followed by aftershocks followed by yet more earthquakes: FanLib, Strikethrough, (for lack of a better term) Boldthrough, and so on. It's created an enormous amount of drama, and I'll be honest -- I've enjoyed a lot of that drama. It's exciting refreshing your browser to see a billion new comments about whatever the latest controversy is! If that makes me the equivalent of a rubbernecker at a traffic accident, well, I'm only human.

This might lead to a great scattering of LJ fandom. But I'm not sure that's a wholly bad thing. )

Oh, LJ

Why must LJ do these things when I have work deadlines and thus no time to read all the outraged posts?

Also: I am amazed that people are still acting *surprised* at journal suspensions by now. Will they accept yet another explanation from LJ management and then act shocked AGAIN the next time? Fandom is beginning to look like Charlie Brown falling for Lucy's football kicking routine over and over again.

Damages

As some of you may (or may not) know, I'm a lawyer. As a result, I can't usually stand watching legal dramas. If they get things wrong, it's annoying, and if they get them right, then it's like going to work! No fun for me either way.

However, I read a description of the new Glenn Close series, "Damages", and I was intrigued. And a little nervous, because she plays a plaintiffs' lawyer representing a class of employees who have lost their pensions, and uh...that's kind of my job description at the moment. Except she's evil! And fabulously wealthy! I am pretty much like a moth to a flame when it comes to ambitious, manipulative female characters of dubious morality, so...I made an exception to my usual avoidance of legal shows and watched it tonight.

And it was so much fun! )

One of those weeks

It's been a week full of communications snafus, sudden deadlines -- and the late nights working that come as a result. *Sigh* I'd like to spend the weekend lazing around on my ass, but I already committed to a potluck dinner/discussion group tonight (there will be wine, so that might help), a class on the Frankfurt School tomorrow morning with some very earnest people whom I can't resist debating, a business meeting tomorrow afternoon (I got myself roped into getting involved with yet another startup, hahahaha -- I am such a sucker for punishment), and then scrambling to do errands/laundry/etc. tomorrow night.

Next week, if anything, will be worse. Major deadlines on Wednesday and Friday pretty much guarantee working til midnight several times (or maybe even an all-nighter). I should start brewing the coffee now.

Jolted awake

So at 4:45 this morning, I was awakened by the ground jerking my building around rather rudely. Turns out it was a 4.2 earthquake -- not so big in the scheme of things, but big enough to set my heart racing as I lay in bed wondering how long it was going to last! I think it also felt especially strong because I was pretty close to the epicenter. Wheeee!

I need to remember to buy a few more gallons of water for my emergency supplies.

House ficwriting

So I've signed up for 3 (three!) prompts for the Cuddy Fest over on LJ. They're due mid-to-late August (from the 13th to the 27th), so I don't think getting them done will be a problem. And I'll definitely post them here, both in my personal journal and in [info]housefic.

The one I'm looking forward to writing the most? Pirateverse! With Cuddy the Pirate Queen and Cameron the kidnapped governor's daughter. *Snort* Cracked-out AUs for the win!

Cheap entertainment

My sweetie managed to score free tickets from a radio station to a performance tonight at a local jazz club! I just looked up the regular ticket price, and they sell for $22 per person...so, not bad at all for the two of us!

We've done pretty well with the whole radio station giveaway thing recently -- a hiphop show a few months back, and a comedy club a few weeks ago. It's going to be a drag having to pay for things once our luck runs out (as it will, of course). But for now, I'm looking forward to a pretty enjoyable evening.

Pownce

Because I'm a lemming and will do whatever the crowd is doing, I've set myself up an account on Pownce. It's kind of like Twitter on steroids -- in addition to short posts (which you can make public, friends-only, or just for specific individuals), you can also attach files (under 10MB), send links, or send invitations to events. I'm not sure how useful it will actually be, but hey, a new toy!

Right now, it's invite-only, and in order to get mine I had to agree to use up the six invites I'm allowed to give away. So I don't have any to spare right now, but I could probably steer anyone who's interested to some places where you can still scrounge some up. (People are selling them on Ebay, which is just ridiculous.)

Transferring entries from LJ - done!

I have successfully transferred everything I wanted to from LJ to here -- mostly fic, with one meta post. The rest, meh, I don't care about. Now all I have to do is start making new posts! Perhaps some short ficlets for a few of the comms around here.

I've even got the layout looking like my LJ page, so I feel right at home!

Settling In

Well, I am now the proud owner of a permanent account. I guess I'd better start uploading some icons to fill those 300 slots! I'm also slooooowly copying fic entries here. I'm backdating them with the same dates as on LJ, so there will be quite a few entries that actually predate the creation of my account.

Once all that is done, it'll be time to start playing with layouts. I suck at that sort of thing, so I'll definitely leave it for last.

New Journal!

Given the turmoil over in LJ-land, I've been playing with various LJ alternatives. So far, this place looks quite nice. *Kicks tires* Even if the Great Fannish Migration doesn't quite happen, I'll probably continue to maintain a presence here. (Ever since I realized that I can read all non-friendslocked posts by using Google Reader, the prospect of jumping around from LJ to IJ to GJ, etc., hasn't bothered me much. It's not that onerous to go to each site every couple of days or so to check on flocked posts that I've missed on Google.)

For anyone who didn't know me on LJ, hello! I'm a pretty mellow sort, and I'm becoming increasingly multifannish, so I look forward to getting to know people outside my old circles.

Fic: Succession (La Femme Nikita) - Index to Chapters

Title: Succession
Fandom: La Femme Nikita
Rating: Probably a hard R, for sexual situations and violence.
Pairings: Contains Madeline/Paul (Operations) and Charles Sand/Madeline as well as references to Adrian/George, but this doesn't fit comfortably into "shippy" categories.
Length: The whole thing is 120k-plus words. There are 31 chapters, which are distributed among four "Parts."
Warning: Michael and Nikita do not appear in this story, except as minor references at the very end.
Summary: Set during the 1980's, this story traces the events that ultimately led to the overthrow of Adrian as leader of Section One and to her replacement by Paul Wolfe (Operations).

This is a somewhat long story, so to avoid having it clog up the journal too much, I've posted the chapters in backdated form. This post contains an index and links to all the chapters for ease of access. But once you get into the story chapters, I've included navigation so you can easily move back and forth without having to return to the index.

Fic: Breaking Point (La Femme Nikita, Het, Madeline/Operations)

Title: Breaking Point
Author: [info]jaybee65
Fandom: La Femme Nikita
Pairing: Madeline/Operations (and, um, the White Room chair)
Rating: Probably R, verging on NC-17
Wordcount: Approx. 4620

Teaser: Before him, bathed in the stark white nothingness of its surroundings, stood the room's centerpiece: the chair, spotless and gleaming in pristine virginity. Its metal frame almost sparkled, like a jewel-encrusted throne -- it beckoned the eye, demanding attention, captivating and horrifying its observer at once.

Fic: Nostalgia (Wicked, Bookverse) (Gen)

Title: Nostalgia
Fandom: Wicked (Bookverse)

Prompt: Glinda returns to Shiz alone
Wordcount: 1240

This was written for the FemGenFicathon, as a gift for [info]lfae. I deliberately kept the time of the story a little vague, except that it's after the events of the book.

Rating: R, probably
Pairing: Madeline/Nikita
Warnings: Somewhat dark, f/f slash, spoilers for the entire series
